In the past forty days, four armed robberies have been reported within ten blocks Maria Hernandez Park, and after a February 13th car service robbery, the string of crime is suspected to be gang related.
Natasha Colin, a 19 year old resident of Starr St, which intersects with the park, describes the recent incline of 3rd Street Gang graffiti going up around the neighborhood. “I’ve never heard of them before,” she says, “and I’m starting to think they’re just a bunch of punks going around terrorizing the neighborhood.”
Ms. Colin was a frequent shopper of the Knickerbocker st. Mexican Deli that was robbed on January 30th, 2011. Natasha says that she has not returned to the deli after she heard news of the robbery. “I don’t go out after dark alone anymore,” Ms. Colin says. “I used to be more worried about getting raped than robbed. But now I’m just scared of everything here.” Colin described that she was in the process of moving to a safer neighborhood, possibly in Williamsburg.
Tariq Ramasquez, 21, was working at the Mexican Deli on Knickerbocker St. at the time of the robbery. “It was just kids. They were punks with a knife. I was not too scared.” An anonymous translator for Tariq described that this was a sort of standard procedure at the Deli. Located in a poor area, “some punks would kill for a bag of chips.” The kids only got away with about one hundred dollars that was in the register, and a few bottles of Jarritos soda.
