Meredith Pollack - Oona's profile

Oona Profile

Don’t worry. You’re not the only one dying from this awful New York City winter. “Let me out of here!” says Oona Kelly, a New York City transplant from Seattle, Washington. Coming from a city famous for its rain, Oona is a strong believer in Seasonal Affective Disorder, commonly known as S.A.D. “Coming from Seattle, I’m sad (S.A.D). We only see the sun three months out of the year.” Oona isn’t having much luck with the New York weather either. But, until spring, while she plans to barricade herself in her warm apartment, she still likes New York.

Oona is soft spoken, and extremely kind. It does not take long to realize that she is definitely not from around here. But she does believe that she has grown more assertive since moving to the city. “I don’t regret coming here,” she says, “I’ve become a bit desensitized, but I was probably over sensitive anyways.” She has learned a lot about herself since she moved here. “New York is more exciting. I like urban... I thought.”

But alas, it seems that nearly every New Yorker loves but silently dreads their own city at the same time. “I went through the ups and downs of liking it then hating it again,” she says about the city. She also discussed the many differences between the people of Seattle and New York. “New York people are kind of shallow. What you look like, how you dress - its a hierarchy spelled out in style.”

Oona does however offer some advice for other West Coast-ers. “You see all these images of what NYC is supposed to look like, but they’re all totally wrong. It might suck for a while when you realize its not everything you thought.” While Oona has successfully adapted from the drastically different and isolated Seattle to the concrete maze of New York city, she warns that “You can expect to be disillusioned.”

New York City is a place where people can come in, settle down and enjoy their experience. Some will stay and ride it out, while others will go on to explore the next new place. Oona plans on doing just that. “I thought I would stay, but I want to travel.” But while she plans to jump from place to place, “I’ll always understand the West Coast.” she says.

The End
