Catching a trout “almost bigger than [she]” at the age of three and a half may have been an accomplishment that shaped Brianna Nichole Lyle's spunky personality.

Fishing, photography, playing the guitar, and extreme sports are just a few of Brianna’s hobbies. She also enjoys traveling, but mostly for humanitarian work. “I had a passport before my parents did,” Brianna said. When she was in the sixth grade, she traveled to the Dominican Republic for her first humanitarian project.

In seventh grade, the self-proclaimed “anal-retentive” Brianna decided that she needed to figure what she was going to do in life. Her mothers’ efforts to scare her out of pursuing journalism, by taking her to the local paper, actually reaffirm her decision to become a journalist—she attended an editorial meeting at Erie Times News and loved it.

Though Brianna applied to seventeen colleges, The New School was not originally on her list of prospective colleges. Her mother wanted her to attend Columbia and took Brianna on multiple campus tours. She left her second forced-tour of Columbia and, by chance, stumbled in on a tour of Parsons School for Design. She ended up applying to Parsons as a Photography major and to Lang for Literary Studies with a concentration in Writing. Brianna sees for herself a career in journalism and is now focused on pursuing her degree at Lang, reserving photography as a hobby.

An avid reader, Brianna’s favorite book is Prozac Nation, a memoir written by Elizabeth Wurtzel on her battle with depression. Chuck Klosterman, a New York Times bestselling author, inspires Brianna as a writer. She appreciates his “whimsical and blunt way of writing,” which she said influenced her own writing style.

Brianna’s dream job would to be to write for “Frugal Traveler,” the New York Times blog on traveling the world on a budget. The particular style of traveling attracted her because she herself hates staying at vacation resorts, and the job also combines her passions for journalism and traveling. “I might be their lady,” she said. Her runner-up dream job would be to write for Rolling Stone, another career that merges her interests of journalism and music.

Brianna’s feisty personality is exemplified by her favorite quote, “Why must everything have a practical application?” which comes from the novel Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert. Brianna sees the quote as a reflection of her life, “If I were to live my life practically, I wouldn’t be in journalism,” she said.
